Man charged with murder in fatal University City area shooting

Man killed in Charlotte, homicide investigation underway

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A man was charged with murder four days after a fatal shooting in Charlotte’s University City area.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Belle Haven apartment complex on the 8700 block of Autumn Lake Court. When they got to the scene, officers found Javon Daniel Alim Sherwood, 21, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound in the parking lot of the apartment complex.

Sherwood was pronounced deceased at the scene.

On Wednesday, CMPD said they had charged Yocouba Meite, 21, with murder in connection with Sherwood’s death. Police did not say what evidence led to Meite being identified as a suspect.

On Thursday, CMPD charged a second suspect, Keith Bryson Powell, 18, with murder and felonious restraint and placed him in custody.

On Friday, CMPD announced that Khalil Dante Capers, 23, had been taken into custody and also been charged with murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

This is an ongoing, active investigation.
