Scottsboro police arrest man in TN child rape case

SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) - Scottsboro police arrested Simon Porter, the man accused of raping a 16-month-old child in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee.

Porter was added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Top Ten Most Wanted List last week.

Scottsboro residents were alarmed that Porter was found in the area, especially Joey Dicus, who lives near the area where a passerby spotted Dicus walking along Highway 79 and called police.

“I live about a mile from where they got him and I have two grandchildren, it’s very scary. I mean, he shouldn’t have made it this far without being caught," said Dicus.

I mean it’s dangerous, kids out playing today, it’s very dangerous," added Dicus.

Scottsboro police say they arrested Porter within five to ten minutes of receiving the call from the person that spotted Porter.

Dicus, like many others in Scottsboro, is alarmed of the disturbing crime Porter is accused of.

“He done something like that at my kid, he wouldn’t be in jail right now. I would have taken care of him by myself,” said Dicus.

Investigators in Tennessee believed Porter has ties to the north Alabama area. However, Scottsboro police say they don’t know why he was in the area or what the ties may be.

“I’m glad he’s behind bars," added Dicus.

Authorities say they were notified of the crime by a doctor who examined the child at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
