First Alert: Cold, rainy conditions opens door to wintry weather at week’s end

Tuesday morning forecast

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - First things first, we have First Alert Days for today, Wednesday and Thursday for more rain – and maybe even wintry weather.

The relentless heavy rain and chilly air that consumed us on Monday will back off a little bit today. Temperatures are starting out in the 40s this morning – which is an improvement over Monday – and most neighborhoods will receive at least inch up to the lower 50s this afternoon.

Again, that’s better than Monday! Still, persistent periods of – mostly - light rain will keep the roads damp and slick through tonight.

Looking beyond today, heavier rain is expected to develop again late Wednesday, Wednesday night, and well into Thursday. Most of the WBTV viewing area will receive another 2 to 3 inches of rain from late Wednesday through Thursday. That raises a concern for flooding, and a flash flood watch is likely to be issued for much of the WBTV area later today (for Wednesday-Thursday period).

Both Wednesday and Thursday look cold again with temps back in the 40s both days – maybe barely 40° on Thursday. The period I’m most concerned about is late Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Most of our area will be in the 30s Thursday morning – maybe even down near 32° north of Charlotte, setting the stage for some wintry weather.

With the colder air in place, a set-up for freezing rain to develop in the mountains Thursday morning is in the forecast. For everyone east of the mountains, all the way to Charlotte, sleet may be observed during the morning hours. However, temperatures are expected to remain above freezing – barely – which should allow any light sleet to melt and minimize any hazardous road conditions.

Keep checking back as this is a fluid situation and the forecast is still subject to change.

Here’s the good news: Friday and the weekend look good! The sun will return Friday and last through both days of the weekend with highs will in the upper 50s all three days.

Be safe on the roads and have a terrific Tuesday!
