Victim in deadly Mint Hill crash identified as Rocky River High School student

MINT HILL, NC (WBTV) - The person killed in a two-car collision on Lawyers Road in Mint Hill Friday morning has been identified as 16-year-old Modesty Monaesia Shelton, a student at Rocky River High School.

Mint Hill police said the wreck happened in the 12600 block of Lawyers Road just before 7 a.m. Friday. They said that Shelton was deceased in her vehicle when officers arrived at the scene of the crash.

Investigators believe Shelton lost control of her vehicle, crossed the centerline and was struck in the passenger side by another vehicle that was properly in their lane of travel. Police believe speed was a factor in the crash. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to the hospital as a precaution and has already been released.

Anyone with information about the crash should contact the Mint Hill Police Department at 704 545-1085.

It didn’t take long for students at Rocky River High School to learn about the death of one of their classmates.

Tyrone McNair, 15, said he had known Shelton since the two went to middle school together. He remembers his classmate fondly.

“She was like very funny. She always like to joke around. She always tried to keep everybody in a good mood,” explained McNair.

He said he was very surprised to hear about what happened.

“You never really think that she would be the one that died,” said McNair.

Rocky River student Zyier Gibson said he had just recently been getting to know Shelton better and was saddened to learn of her death.

“A couple weeks ago we were facetiming on her phone. I was getting to know her and stuff and I seen her in the hallway on Monday and I said ‘hey’ to her. It’s just crazy,” said Gibson.

The student said he had seen some of Shelton’s friends crying earlier in the day because of what happened.

“You were loved by a lot of people and you will be missed,” said Gibson.
