UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Two deputies were injured after a car crash in Union County Wednesday morning, shutting down a portion of Highway 601 North.
Around 5 a.m. a black Ford Fusion was traveling south when the vehicle passed a white Toyota pickup truck and a tractor trailer traveling south in a no passing zone in heavy fog. As the Ford passed the tractor trailer, it collided with a Union County Sheriff’s Deputy patrol car that was traveling north, according to an official with NC Department of Public Safety.
The deputy’s patrol car then collided with the tractor trailer causing him to travel off the roadway to the left in a ditch, officials say.
On Thursday, the Union County Sheriff’s Office released a video showing the moments when the crash happened.
Deputies say the video was captured by a private citizen’s in-car camera Wednesday morning shortly after 4:30 a.m.
In the video, a vehicle attempts to pass the car capturing the footage and an 18-wheeler in front of it, in a no-passing zone.
The driver collided with a marked UCSO patrol car, causing the patrol car to strike the 18-wheeler.
Officials say the deputies were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Officials have not said what may have caused the crash.
Deputies say the careless actions of the driver should serve as a reminder to everyone to please be careful and slow down.
The case remains under investigation by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
