Charlotte runner to complete 12-hour run to raise money for friend

Man runs for 12 hours to raise money for friend

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - On Wednesday, a local runner is running for 12 hours in hopes of raising money for his friend.

Mark Kauffman will run nearly three marathons in a row at Freedom Park to raise money for Dirk Allman, also known as “DJ Nostalgia.”

Allman, a Charlotte native, has been spinning records from the 1930s and 40s for more than 30 years throughout the Charlotte area. He often DJ’s at places like Legion Brewing or Rhino Market, where he plays regularly.

A few months ago, Allman - who spent years taking care of his late mother - ran into some financial hardships, owing more than $1,800 in property taxes on his family home.

That’s when Kauffman ran in to help, hoping his marathon-long day will inspire onlookers to donate to his friend’s cause.

Kauffman says he hopes this act inspires more people to help their neighbors and Allman says he is shocked by the act of kindness, but so grateful for Kauffman’s help.

“I’m still wondering if I’m dreaming it... a lot of my friends are half my age now, and they kind of update me on things and let me know how things have changed,” said Allman.

“I hope that he just gets noticed more by the community for the great guy that he is and what he’s done over the years for the community,” said Kauffman.

At 5 p.m. Wednesday evening, Kauffman and several others will run from Freedom Park to the Improper Pig for an after-party where DJ Nostalgia provided the old school entertainment.

Kauffman is hoping to raise anywhere from 10 cents to $2 for every mile he ran per donor.
