MORGANTON, NC (WBTV) - Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant says preliminary autopsy results have moved the investigation of the death of a man in his home towards a murder investigation.
Investigators began looking into the death of Robert Biggerstaff after his body was found in his mobile home on Sugarloaf Road Tuesday evening.
Deputies had gone to the home for a welfare check after receiving a call. Inside they found the body of the 69-year-old man. It was evident he had been dead for days.
While the sheriff would not detail the cause of death, he said it was no accident.
Outside the home, investigators noticed Biggerstaff’s car was missing. On Wednesday, it was recovered and 53-year-old Cathy Chapman was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle. She has denied any knowledge of Biggerstaff’s death.
Whisenant says his detectives do have some leads and are working with the State Bureau of investigation to follow up on them.
“We will solve this case,” he said.
Anyone with further information should call the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
