DNA links man to 1992 sexual assault cold case in Charlotte

Charges filed in Charlotte cold case

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - CMPD’s Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit has charged a man with a crime that occurred in east Charlotte in 1992.

Kenneth McIllwaine, 52, has been charged with first degree kidnapping and second degree rape. McIllwaine reportedly offered a woman a ride home on June 5, 1992 before driving her to the 2200 block of Rama Road sexually assaulting her. The victim states that McIllwaine later forced her into a dumpster before driving off.

A sexual assault kit was initially completed in 1992 for the victim and was reexamined in 2017 when police found a match that linked the DNA to McIllwaine.

McIllwaine is currently incarcerated for a 1995 rape that he was connected to through DNA in 2015.
