Hamilton star returns to Union County high school to mentor students

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Hamilton cast member returned to his alma mater to mentor performing arts students aspiring to become Broadway sensations.

Tyler McKenzie graduated from Central Academy of Technology and Arts in 2009 and returned to his roots to host master classes for the school’s performing arts students.

Students sang and danced alongside the Broadway performer, and asked about what they need to know, on and off stage, as they work to prepare themselves for a life in the spotlight.

“I’m telling them little things that I notice when they’re dancing and singing and how that’ll help them and how they can push the boundaries,” McKenzie told WBTV reporter Dedrick Russell.

“I’m also telling them that it is so OK to be vulnerable on that stage and... not be afraid to mess up and make a few mistakes on the stage because that’s when the good stuff happens.”

McKenzie has also performed in the Broadway productions Mamma Mia and Matilda, the national tour.
