HIDDENITE, NC (WBTV) - Still no arrests in the theft of an estimated $60,000 worth of gemstones from an emerald mine in Alexander County but investigators are working on it, says Sheriff Chris Bowman. “We do have a lead that we are following.”
The Emerald Hollow Mine was hit by thieves early Sunday. Someone broke out a window and avoided the surveillance cameras and were able to take cut and uncut emeralds, and hiddenite and other other gemstones.
Most of the items taken were dug up on the property over the years. Jason Martin, owner of the mine, says the crooks seem to know which pieces to take. “They were all valuable.”
The gemstones, because of the quality and size, will be difficult to sell on the streets, said Martin, and added, they will be tough to replace. He is hoping authorities will catch the thieves before they get rid of the stolen items. He even had a message for the thieves. “Call us and we will talk.”
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the thefts to contact the Alexander County Sheriff’s office.
