$60,000 worth of precious gems stolen during break-in at NC emerald mine

ALEXANDER COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Someone broke into an Alexander County gem mine over the weekend and robbed the place of cash, jewelry and gemstones.

The break-in and robbery happened Saturday night at the Emerald Hollow Mine on Emerald Hollow Mine Drive in Hiddenite. The business is out at least $60,000, according to a report with the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office. That number could increase, as damage and property loss is still being assessed.

Mine workers posted on Facebook Sunday asking for the public’s help in finding who was responsible.

“Multiple structures on the property were vandalized, cash registers were emptied, our Lapidary was hit hardest. They cleaned out the register and somehow got into the safe, and pried open the display cases, breaking glass in a few of them, to take jewelry and gemstones," Emerald Hollow Mine posted.

The property is gated, according to Emerald Hollow Mine, and everything taken was small and easy to carry.

After arriving at the scene, police found that a window had been busted out and entry was made through this window into a room where gems are cut and kept and sold.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office at 828-632-1111. The public can also call the mine directly at 828-635-0556.
