Man arrested after SWAT situation at Charlotte apartment complex

SWAT standoff ends, wanted felon arrested

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV Web Staff) - A man barricaded in a stairwell at an apartment complex was taken into custody after a SWAT situation that lasted about five hours in southeast Charlotte.

The incident unfolded around 11 a.m. at the McAlpine Ridge Apartment complex on Krefeld Glen Drive, located just off Independence Boulevard. Police say the man, identified as 30-year-old Todd O’Brien Houston, was wanted on 32 felony warrants.

Before Houston could be apprehended, police said, he took off in a stolen vehicle. A police helicopter followed him to the apartment complex, where he jumped from the vehicle.

He then hid under a stairwell with a gun to his head, according to police sources.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police tweeted about the incident just before 11:30 a.m., saying a person was barricaded at the complex.

A resident of the the apartment complex told WBTV’s Lauren Tostenson they were asked to evacuate the area. They also mentioned they saw someone run into an empty apartment and hunker down before police arrived.

Around 4:30 p.m., police said Houston gave himself up and was taken into custody. Officers said Houston, who is a convicted felon, had a handgun with an obliterated serial number.

His charges have not been released.
