CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department are sharing new surveillance video in hopes of identifying two men who robbed a sporting goods store in west Charlotte.
The incident happened in the middle of the afternoon on Sept. 12 at the Hibbett Sports on Freedom Drive. The suspects entered the store twice that day, according to Detective Brandon Miller with the CMPD.
“They ask the clerk could they look at a pair of shoes just like any normal customer would,” explained Miller.
Surveillance video shows one of the men approach the register as if he is ready to make a purchase, but as the clerk starts ringing him up, the man pulls out a firearm.
“When the clerk asks them how they’re going to pay, that’s when suspect number one pulls out a gun from his waistband and says ‘I’m going to pay with this’,” explained Miller.
While one of the men is seen in the video rummaging through the cash register, the other suspect keeps the gun trained on the employees.
“We don’t know if it is something where they have done something similar and feel like they can get away with it now at this point, but either way we need to get them off the street,” said Miller.
The men left the store on foot, but are believed to have gotten into a silver vehicle. Miller said robbery situations are not the norm for this section of Charlotte.
“We typically don’t see too much of anything like this in this area which is why it’s really shocking,” explained the detective.
Miller said the first suspect is about 6’1”, with a medium-stocky build, and long shoulder-length dreads. The man was wearing sunglasses during the robbery. The other suspect is between 5’8” and 5’10” with a slim build. He was wearing all black during the robbery.
