CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A former teacher at a high school in Cleveland County was arrested Wednesday, accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a female student.
Emma Logan Costner, 25, is charged with two counts of felony sex act with a student. Deputies say she turned herself in Wednesday after an investigation into the accusations began in late September.
According to the report, Costner was a teacher at Crest High School - where the alleged victim was a student - at the time of the offenses.
After turning herself in, Costner was placed in the Cleveland County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond.
Major Durwin Briscoe with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office told WBTV that a situation where a minor may be a victim takes priority for detectives in Cleveland County.
“When we send our children to school, we look for a level for them to be protected,” said Briscoe.
Briscoe said the parents of a 17-year-old girl at Crest High School contacted law enforcement about a potential relationship between their child and Costner. Detectives began looking into the allegations.
“We have to give them credit for being parents that are Johnny on the spot in knowing what their children are doing and knowing the appropriate way to handle it,” said the major regarding the tip that came from the parents of the student.
Briscoe advises all parents keep tabs on who their children are communicating with.
“Check your children’s social media. Check their cellphones. All children nowadays have a cellphone. Be cognizant of who they’re texting and who they are having contact with,” said Briscoe.
The major said that Costner bonded out of jail Wednesday, but is expected to go before a judge in Cleveland County Thursday morning.
