CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A pedestrian struck and killed on E. Independence Boulevard Tuesday evening has been identified by police as 51-year-old Lal Than Zuala.
The crash happened around 7:50 p.m. in the 6100 block of E. Independence Boulevard. Medic pronounced Zuala dead on scene.
Police say a 2000 Ford Focus was traveling southeast on E. Independence Boulevard in the second lane from the concrete barrier when it struck Zuala, who was crossing the road.
Zuala was not walking in a designated crosswalk during the time of the crash, according to officials. Police say alcohol use by the pedestrian is suspected.
Police say the driver of the Ford Focus was screened and was found not to be impaired. Excessive speed is also not a suspected contributing factor for the driver, according to the release.
